We believe that mental health should be treated equally to physical health and – just like physical first aid – Mental Health First Aid training should be an essential requirement in the workplace.

 

 

SUICIDE FIRST AID LITE – Virtual Training

Course Overview:

Teaching the theory and practice of suicide intervention skills that can be applied in any professional or personal setting, this programme is delivered over 3 hours as a suicide prevention awareness session: for anyone who seeks greater understanding and confidence to intervene with people at risk of suicide. The Suicide First Aid Lite (Virtual) course gives learners the knowledge and tools to understand that suicide is one of the most preventable deaths and some basic skills can help someone with thoughts of suicide stay safe from their thoughts and stay alive.

Course content:

Part 1 – 90 minutes

  • Stigma and survivors of bereavement by suicide and the Hidden Toll
  • Suicide thoughts and suicide behaviour
  • Intention of behaviour versus outcome of behaviour
  • Possible causes of suicide thoughts
  • Suicide – the ripple effect

Part 2 – 90 minutes

  • ‘I’m really glad you told me’ audio visual 
  • Suicide Safety Guidance 
  • Recognising and asking about suicide 
  • Referring a person onto suicide first aiders

Suicide First Aid Lite training offers learning outcomes that are knowledge based and factual. This training can be used as a stand-alone programme or as the first part of a journey to learn suicide prevention skills.

The information in SFAL is easy to grasp for people of all skill levels and those with no prior knowledge of the subject. It is designed to meet the needs of virtual groups and could be used as a forerunner to the one-day Suicide First Aid Programme. 
 
No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self- reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide. There is no expectation on participants to share personal experiences.

 

SUICIDE FIRST AID – Understanding Suicide Intervention

The one-day programme Suicide First Aid through Understanding Suicide Interventions is a City & Guilds qualification programme and the next step for people wanting a more in-depth practice-based approach to the learning. 

Course content:

  • The impact and value of personal and professional experience with suicide
  • Barriers that prevent people at risk seeking help
  • Prevalence of suicide thoughts and suicide behaviours
  • The Signs of Suicide and the Suicide-Safety Guide
  • Partnership working and community resources

Taught over 6 hours using tutor facilitated Socratic learning, tutor-led role-play, mini lectures, group work and audiovisual presentations. This is a highly interactive and emotionally engaging learning experience.

Learning outcomes:

  • Suicide behaviour; reasons and magnitude of the community health problem.
  • Role of the carer in managing suicide interventions; different roles with different people
  • Understand approaches and process of suicide intervention including desired outcomes
  • Understand the importance of self-reflection and personal impact when working with suicide and people at risk

.No previous experience or training is necessary. Participants will be asked to self- reflect and empathise with a person having thoughts of suicide.

Participants will gain 6 QCF credit points at Level 4 by completing a workbook of tasks that are assessed against the set learning outcomes

        MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING

Mental Health First Aider 

The Mental Health First Aider (MHFA) training will give your employees practical skills, enabling them to create a safe, healthy workplace in which they are able to support their own mental health, as well as that of their colleagues. Participants on the course will also gain awareness, and the ability to signpost people to the appropriate care and support.

Course Details:

The course takes two days to complete, and can be completed either over two consecutive days or on two days over a two week period. Each course can accommodate 10-16 delegates, and a Certificate of Attendance will be issued by MHFA England to each delegate.

Training Objectives:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of a range of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress using the Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge of how to help someone recover by guiding them to further support, including self-help resources, internal support such as EAP and external sources such as a GP
  • Understanding of how to keep themselves safe while performing their duties

Day One

Each day is split into two sessions. The first session will provide participants with background knowledge about Mental Health First Aid and a general understanding of mental health, going on to focus specifically on depression. The second session covers suicide and suicidal crisis, first aid for depression, alcohol and drugs, and self-care.

Day Two

On day two, session 1 will give participants a broad understanding of anxiety and anxiety disorders – including treatments and resources – as well as cognitive distortions, personality disorders, eating disorders and self-harm. Session 2 focuses primarily on psychosis, including first aid for psychosis, treatments and resources. This session will also cover action planning for using MHFA

Mental Health Champion

A full day awareness and skills course which will teach you to:

  • Recognise the main signs and symptoms of common mental health issues
  • Provide initial support
  • Guide a person towards appropriate professional help
  • Be mindful of your own wellbeing
  • Develop an understanding of how you can create and maintain a healthier workforce or community.

Mental Health Awareness

An half day introductory course designed to increase mental health awareness and give an understanding of how to look after wellbeing and challenge stigma. When you complete your course you will get a certificate of attendance and a manual to keep and refer to whenever you need it. 

 

If you’re a Mental Health First Aider or a MHFA Champion, it is  recommended that you take the MHFA refresher course every three years to keep your awareness of mental health support current, update your knowledge of mental health and what influences it, and practice applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan.
